Fleetwood Mac- Sisters of the Moon (live from the Mirage tour)
This video/performance is simply perfect. There are enough tiny transcendent parts like Mick Fleetwood having a roadie pour beer into his mouth or Lindsey Buckingham’s open shirt and hat combo to make the video excellent before you even get to the amazing power of Stevie Nicks, possibly at her peak as a live performer here. Her wailing “you say no baby!” followed by what sounds like her speaking in tongues packs more punch into 30 seconds than most performers ever achieve, and she just twirls away like it’s nothing. As always, the other members of Fleetwood Mac get a bit outshined by Stevie, but the band jam at the end is nothing short of epic, with Lindsey especially powering through some insane playing. It’s been said many times, but the reason Fleetwood Mac worked is the competition between the performers to constantly out-do each other, which pushed all of them further and further in live performance.
And how can you not love Stevie’s crazy faces from 4:56-5:18, or her saying “You have no idea how many stuffed animals live at my house” as she leaves the stage?

So yesterday I went to Ocean City with my cousins, and was pleasantly surprised to find that there’s a legit record store on the boardwalk now. Since I have pretty much no willpower when it comes to not buying things I want, I got a bunch of records.
You’ve probably noticed that most of these records are 30+ years old, and are records I really should have already. That’s what happens when you try to start a record collection and your parents/family “aren’t really into” music and don’t have any records you can steal.

coldinalaska’s Stevie Nicks “I Can’t Wait” GIFs are great, now all I need is one of Stevie dancing up and down the stairs in that ridiculous dress.

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]Stevie Nicks- Bella Donna (Stripped Down Semi-Acapella)
Since I got my new record player earlier in the week, I have been listening to Stevie Nicks’ Bella Donna album a ridiculous amount. However, the title track was one that I’ve never truly loved, due to the first verse’s cringeworthy lyrics. When I was searching for an acapella of Wild Heart though, I found this version of the song and it gave me a new perspective. We all know Stevie Nicks is an excellent vocalist, but here the whole song rests on her vocal prowess, and the song is made BETTER for it. The part from 2:11-2:28 where Stevie makes excellent use of vibrato and starts really belting but still maintains the tenderness in her vocal shows why she’s one of the best singers out there. How many other singers can get to that level of intensity but still express emotions besides anger? I know LOTS of female singers (seriously, look back through the archives, it’s pretty much all ladies all the time around here musically) and there are few who can pull that off. And that’s not even the best part of the song, which is from 4:08-4:26. Stevie’s voice becomes softer, with more sadness and sympathy in it, before jumping back up to its previous levels with “And you never thought it would” (incidentally this is the best part of the released version as well, and may be better with the additional instrumental build, I haven’t decided yet). How she manages to put so much power and drama into the frankly ludicrous lyrics of “And your face becomes thin…and you never thought it would”, making them emotional instead of too ridiculous is a mystery to me, but it works amazingly well. When the vocals are the star of the track and aren’t obscured by an excess of backing vocals and other instruments, what’s excellent about the song can shine and it gives the lyrics a deeper meaning as well.
On another Bella Donna note, I really hope the album gets a Deluxe expanded and remastered release for its 30th anniversary, the songs would really benefit from it, even the ones that were remastered in 1998 for the Enchanted box set, and there’s a wealth of unreleased tracks from these sessions that it would be amazing to hear, including a solo version of Gypsy and demos with just Stevie and a piano. Reprise Records needs to get on releasing that shit for 2011, hopefully to coincide with a new album/tour from Stevie.
Stevie Nicks- I Can’t Wait
This is where the bar is set for 80’s synth-pop music, and I just don’t think Lady Gaga/La Roux/every other pop act reviving that sound is going to be able to top it. And how ridiculously amazing is this video?
I have been on such a Stevie Nicks kick lately. I tend to get a little obsessive about bands/singers for a short period of time, so there’s probably going to be more Stevie in the near future.

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]Stevie Nicks- Wild Heart
In dark sorrow
They gaze down into the darkest heart
If I leave you
You say not even you can tear us apart
Say you’re leaving
You say you don’t even know
How to start…how to start…how to start
Well…believe it then
And don’t blame it on my soul
Blame it on my wild heart
How has this song been forgotten by pretty much everyone? It’s such an epic, and it’s one of Stevie’s most dance-y songs by the time it finishes. (Sidebar: Chris and I have decided Stevie Nicks has the perfect voice for Italo Disco. Can someone more talented than me PLEASE make an amazing disco remix of this?) The backing vocals (by Sharon Celoni and Lori Perry) are excellent and used for maximum effect throughout, but how amazing is it at 4:50 in when it cuts out to just Stevie belting about the darkest places of your mind before bringing those BV back while Stevie does some ethereal cooing over top? There’s some great 80’s synthesizer here, and the music is interesting enough that the 6 minutes of the song fly by without the music becoming too repetitive. Lyrically, it’s a great non-sad break-up song up until Stevie gets to the “where are the children” part, which adds another layer but also doesn’t make much sense considering what came before it. As usual though, Stevie sells the lyrics so well with intense vocals that she could be singing about anything and it’d be great. The passion carries the song through and overrides the need for logical consistency, and I’d much rather have the passion than have everything fit in a neat little package.

So we go to the other side of the mirror, my favorite place, once more, and I get to take my time, for the first time. A high price…for your luxury. And the woman may be awestruck, and the woman may truly care but the..
woman is so tired that the…
woman
disappears…but not really, just short walks in the mist
every once in a while…
-Stevie Nicks, from the Introduction to “The Enchanted Works of Stevie Nicks” box set.
Stevie, I love you, never change. Life would be so much emptier without some of your 80’s klonopin-fueled ramblings. Enchanted Works of Stevie Nicks = HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended. I found the 3-disc set for 20 bucks, and it was money well spent, even just for the book it came with.

The best cameo in a music video ever. Stevie is way too bootylicious for you, baby.

That Gold Dust Woman had to be the b-side to fucking Don’t Stop (maybe the only Fleetwood Mac song I really and truly despise) is just a travesty.

So I know I posted a live version of Rhiannon before, but this is the version I REALLY wanted to post, it just wasn’t up on youtube then. I remember downloading this from Kazaa (you guys all remember Kazaa right?) when I was 14, and watching it over and over again. I haven’t seen it in a few years, and it might be even better than I remembered it. The last minute and a half is so intense and hypnotic, it’s one of those things that restores my faith in the power of music and always makes me feel better. This is another song (like Wuthering Heights) where I’m glad no one’s ever caught me singing along because you just have to go for it and belt that shit out, and to my eternal disappointment I can’t belt out a song like Stevie can.

In honor of 62nd birthday of Our Lady of the Velvet-Moonlit Doves, here are my favorite moments from the “Angel” sequence of the Tusk documentary:
0:48 - Lindsay, who, sure, is not Stevie, but looks like a HWAGP nonetheless.
1:02 - The side ponytail.
2:02 - Stevie’s ankles.
2:13 - “Hey, you guys? Let me explain to you how singing works.”
4:03 - THAT HAT!
5:09 - “…andtothosethatilovedlikeaghostthroughafoglikea [GASP] charmedhourandahauntedsong…”
6:26 - The moment I realized that the username of the person who posted this video is “hauntedsong.”
6:29 - Lindsay exerts his powers over Stevie’s brain.
6:35 - “Is my voice haunting you? Is it?”
8:10 - [Dance Break]
9:21 - Classic Stevie Nicks sentence structure: “Ballet is so physically difficult that it takes, if you have any problems or if you’re worried about anything and you come down and do this for fifteen, twenty minutes even, you know, if you don’t even get to class, it, you can’t think about anything else.”
I was saving this for my last Stevie Nicks birthday tribute post of the day, since it’s one of my favorite things in the entire world. Everything she says is ridiculous, you get to watch the dynamics of Fleetwood Mac and see how Lindsey pushes her around a little bit, but then she just rocks out on stage and makes “Angel” into a song that’s 10x better.
Also, this is one of Courtney Love’s favorites too. In one of the simultaneously most exciting and most pathetic moments of my life, we had some Twitter back-and-forth about how great it is, and how Stevie/Lindsey is similar to Courtney/Billy Corgan.

Stevie Nicks- Sorcerer
Sorcerer
Who is the master
A man and woman on a star stream
In the middle of a snow dream
Sorcerer
Show me the high life
Come over
Let me put you on ice
An unjustly forgotten gem. This song is also the only good thing Sheryl Crow has ever been associated with.
Very few songs can stand up to being turned into a 9-minute epic with multiple instrumental breaks, orchestral accompaniment, and new lyrics. Edge of Seventeen is a song that can. Proof that Stevie can still bring it. The new verse from 7:05-7:40 is the best part.
Fleetwood Mac- Silver Springs (live from The Dance, 1997)
Time cast a spell on you…but you won’t forget me…
(was I such a fool)
I know I could’ve loved you, but you would not let me..
(Give me just a chance)
I’ll follow you down ‘til the sound of my voice will haunt you..
You’ll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you..
This song was pretty much forgotten for decades, left as a b-side because Lindsey Buckingham didn’t want to put this song about how much of a dick he was on the Rumors album, but it became a hit after it was part of their first reunion tour. This version isn’t quite as good as the original recording, but the image of her right in Buckingham’s face, taunting him with “you’ll never get away…never get away” is too good to pass up. Stevie always wins in the end.
