The Cake- Annabelle Clark

The Cake are a largely unknown but interesting band from the late 60’s. The two most obvious touchstones for them are the Phil Spector-produced girl groups in terms of production and Nico in terms of vocal style. You’d think those disparate reference points would clash and lead to a mess of a song, but the darker and flatter vocal tone contrasts nicely with the more upbeat backing vocals and brings out the resentment in the lyrics without a sassy or judgmental tone that most other 60’s singers would have used.

I really don’t know how I wasn’t aware of this earlier. It’s way too relevant to my interests for me to not know about.
